Traditionally, ha means 'breath' and 'ole means 'without.' When native Hawai'ians first saw white people, they thought they looked like ghosts, hence, "without breath." Also, as a greeting, ancient Hawai'ians would place their foreheads together to breathe in the other person. White people didn't do this, so they were "without breath." Haole has come to be a derogatory term for many in Hawai'i, generally referring to white people. When you hear, "Go home, haole!" you know the speaker is not being friendly. Many Hawai'ians will tell you the first part of what I said here (no breath, etc.), and that 'haole' refers to anyone not native, but I disagree. I have lived in Hawai'i for 12 years and I have never once heard 'haole' in reference to anyone who wasn't white.
