I plan on attending Hawaii Pacific University and I would really like to know the good and bad areas of Oahu. I will be moving there by myself, I'm 18 and a female so I need somewhere safe! Is living downtown better? or in the outskirts? Thank you!

Downtown can be sketchy but there are good apartments that are safe, if you can afford Capitol Place then even better. I would avoid places like Kalihi because those are the ghettos of Hawaii. Most people prefer the east side such as Kahala, Hawaii Kai and parts of Kaimuki but these places are expensive. Manoa and Nuuanu are pretty decent places to live as well but if you are on a budget its kind of hard. Not everywhere on the east side is safe. Palolo and the industrial part of Kapahulu is kind of ghetto.

There are some safe places on the west side of Oahu thats affordable but traffic is really bad coming in to town. Aiea, Moanalua, Mililani, Royal kunia and Waikele are safe places to live on the west side. Avoid Wainaie, Nanakuli, Waipahu or even Pearl City.

There is the Kaneohe HPU location & the downtown one.

Living on the Windward side (Kaneohe location) is safe in general, except maybe for Waimanalo

Downtown, I would stay away from Chinatown at night time, day time is fine, except for the crack head homeless that venture out during the day.

General places to stay away from are Kalihi, Waipahu, Waianae, Ewa Beach.

The general rule is, if it's ghetto, avoid it.

Other than that, Honolulu Hawaii (the capital of HI) is rated the best quality of life to live in the USA

Oops sorry, wrong link, that was my friend at HPU (dreaming).
