I was born and raised on Kauai, and as much as I love Kauai and think it's a fabulous vacation spot, for teenagers I think MAUI is a far better choice.

Kauai is incredibly boring unless you enjoy the typical Hawaiian outdoor activities (which I did not). Being an indoor girl, aside from my school activities, Kauai had very little appeal to me.

Oahu has great everything, but it is so crowded that I can't stand Oahu. I think Maui is a perfect blend of the beauty of Kauai, but with a little more bustle and activity like Oahu. Not as much as Oahu, but a good amount.

The food in Hawaii seems the same wherever you go, although Kauai has Hamura Saimin which people seem to love love love. I don't get it, it's just noodles to me, but I have met tourists who will go straight from the airport to Hamura Saimin because they love it that much. So Kauai has that, but I am sure Maui has something similar, a restaurant that locals will swear is the place to go. Oh and Maui has guri guri ice cream so that's another plus for Maui.

Maui will have better shopping than Kauai, but the best shopping is on Oahu. And I am sure by this time all the islands have ziplining. And they will all have luaus.

So Maui I think is a better choice, and I like Kahului on Maui.

for a teen, I don't suggest Kaua'i. Kaua'i is country. If you appreciate the beautiful scenery and real laid back a mellow setting, then Kaua'i is the way to go (if you're into that kind). Oahu is the city. Oahu has all of the stuff you're looking for pretty much. Maui's ok. It's not too crowded and not too boring. If choosing just between Kaua'i and Maui, I suggest Maui.

Anywhere in Hawaii, the beaches will be beautiful, the food is "ono kine grindz" (good food) no matter where, Maui has limited shopping because there's not much malls, etc. No matter which island, you'll have a good time

If you're choosing between Kauai and Maui, I'd say Maui. I live on Oahu, but my husband and I went to Maui for our anniversary a few years ago. Kahului, Lahaina and Kihei are going to be the population centers. Upcountry is beautiful but rural (that's where we stayed). The Kapalua resort is supposed to be wonderful and they do have ziplining the last time I heard. There are luau all over the place, so that shouldn't be a problem.

If you want fun and not overcrowded, then Big Island is the place to go. I lived in Big Island for 7 long years. Now dont let the name fool you, its actually not that populated and not too developed much to my surprise. It will be a big city in the future. Just watch. And personally, im totally okay with that. But Big Island has its beautiful beaches, great hotels, food....well this is Hawaii, food isnt as great as it seems. Theres good shopping in the resort areas. not too much in the regular big island. There is ziplining and it is FUN. And not to mention the great luau's here.

Now theres two types of Big Island. Theres the Big Island that you see when your at the resorts. And then theres the normal Big Island. Honestly, if your visiting, stick with the resort area's. There is way more to do there. When you live in Big Island, it gets extremely boring (and surfing got old fast). I guess thats why I moved back to Honolulu.

Anyways hope this helped

Maui,

Everything you list, Maui has.

Of course beautiful hotels usually come with a pretty good size price tag.

If $$ isn't a big obstacle, Wailea or Kaanapali areas are good choices
