To rent snorkel gear...or not to rent, in Hawaii? How much does it cost?

Going to Hawaii and debating on whether or not to purchase and take our own snorkel gear. I already have 1 pair of flippers, and 2 snorkels, so I wonder if I can just rent one pair of flippers and 2 masks. Maybe we shouldn't lug our own with us to save room in our suitcase. I just wonder how clean the rental snorkels are? Are they sanitized effectively?

Also, can anyone give me a ballpark cost of rentals? I just figured by the time we paid rental fees, we may as well have purchased our own gear! We'll be on Maui for 6 days and Oahu for 4 days.

I could really use A LOT of information on the whole snorkel thing. Thanks!

Oh, it is so cheap to rent the snorkel gear there. I think my husband and I spent $25-$35 total for both of us for over a week. I have my own snorkel gear and didn't even bother to bring it because of suitcase space. The equipment you rent is great and sanitary, and the rental shops are EVERYWHERE. But if you prefer your own gear, then you will save a little money.

A tip: If you go on a tour to Molokini, take the afternoon tour. (I did the Tradewinds II and it was great.) It's about a third of the morning tour cost and a fraction of the people. On a boat that held 200, there were only 35 on our boat, giving us plenty of room in the water and on the boat. (They also offered the snuba that you were asking about.) They try to tell you that the morning tour offers "more fish" but that's not true. Also, the water clarity can be better in the afternoon.

Another tip: Go to Black Rock! (Maui) I cannot recommend it enough. It's just a free snorkeling spot on a small beach, but by far the best snorkeling I did in Maui. We went back everyday.

Hanauma Bay is a great spot to start, if you are going to Oahu first. You see a little movie first that identifies the fish for you, and is a great place for beginners. Shallow water, nice beach for a picnic, and world-class snorkeling.

Lastly, if you are into a thrill, try snorkeling with galapagos sharks (in a cage) on the North Shore. It was an experience I'll never forget.

Have a great vacation. I am green with envy at all the great snorkeling you are going to do!

These days, you want to travel light or at least stay in the allowed weight limit to avoid big bucks for overweight. We had to move some stuff to carry-on (had 53 punds instead of the allowed 50).

Renting snorkel gear all adds up and it's really not that good. If you want to snorkel quite frequently in Hawaii, buy the snorkel gear on island at Wal Mart cheap - it will definitely last for your 1 week in Hawaii - or buy more quality equipment, even Costco Kona has it always available.

Hope this helps. Have a great time snorkeling in Hawaii. Aloha, Pua

I'd definitely recommend your own mask and snorkel. Fins would be great too, but maybe not a necessity. As mentioned above, if you end up with an ill-fitting mask it can all but ruin any time you spend in the water. Better to go knowing that your stuff fits and is comfortable, and it's really not all that expensive.

I would recommend against buying the walmart stuff on the island, as you'll be right back with fitment issues and you'll be spending more to buy it over there, and you'd still have to fly it from Oahu to Maui (or vice versa, whichever way you're going).

If you plan to spend a lot of time in the water - and it's Hawaii, so I can't imagin not wanting to! - I think you'll have a much more enjoyable time if you get appropriate equipment that fits you well.

Oh, and you'll definitely enjoy a snorkel trip out to Molokini off Maui!

Enjoy your trip!

i had the same situation and ended buying my own gear..from what i remember it wasnt very expensive to rent gear but for only a few dollars more i was able to buy my own and i was able to pick the perfect fitting mask for my face(no leaks)...when renting they give you a well used mask that may not fit around your face perfectly causing leaks which in turn causes you major pains while trying to have fun--i've made the mistake of using cheap gear and ended up ruining my snorkeling time cause my mask kept filling up with water--they dont take up alot of space in your suitcase(mask and snorkel dont anyway, fins maybe do)--to save space i bring my own snorkel/mask and rent fins(fin rentals are only a few dollars a weeks)..bottom line, better value to buy your own gear, at least mask and snorkel--nobody had their mouths all over it--fins you can get away with renting...check out this link--its a popular hawaii chain

you should contact the JAG(Judge Advocate General) office. they should be able to get it straight for you. and inform them of what her commander told you about not being able to make her pay the rent. unless things have changed tremendously, he can order her to pay it or face disciplinary action.
