My boyfriend took a picture of a blue stop sign in Honolulu, HI. I've tried looking for it on the internet but I can't find anything explaining why it would be blue instead of red. We thought it was funny and we're curious about it. Anyone out there know why?

The standard stop sign used in Hawaii is red. The blue stop sign you saw must have been on private property. Many shopping centers use a blue stop sign while others use the standard red one. I don't know the reason for this but I do know that they exist. I have never seen a blue stop sign anyplace but on private property.

I found some additional information. The standard stop sign in Hawaii is red, as regulated by the federal government. Private land owners have been using other color stop signs and one way signs so they don't appear to be official signs. It is explained fully in the referenced Honolulu Star-Bulletin article

Some stop signs are blue because In places that have to do with water like Hawaii, Jersey shore, and Florida they made their street stop signs blue but the stop signs on safety swing arms on school buses and ice cream trucks are always still red and octagon. All stop signs are octagon.

There are blue stop signs in Kaneohe at the Windward Mall. It is private property.

The rail road answer is way off, because we don't have rail roads! Sorry. I do believe the private property reason, especially since i know that the Stop signs at Windward Mall are blue.

The reason some stop signs are blue-according to my driving teacher-is because the land that the property is on (ie. a mall) is owned by Kam schools.

Hopefully I got that info correct. :-)

Because blue attacks don't hurt you if you stay still.

I agree with Amanda above me. I was told that for color blind people, the sign is visible to them. There are blue stop signs in Kapolei, HI.

maybe you are color blind. we've been learning about it in class and it is a sex-linked recessive trait (mainly in males).
