Question:
Speed limits in Hawaii, especially on O'Ahu?

I'm moving out to O'Ahu within the next month and I've been looking at Google maps. The highest speed limit I can find is 35 mph. I want to know... is that it?! I'm used to driving on I-95 at 70 mph and I'm just wondering if I'm going to have to tone it down just a little.

*chuckle* Yeah the speed limit in HI is much slower than the mainland - in town you'll never go over 35 and on the interstate its about 55-60 - so just prepare for island time, and leave early if you need to get anywhere =)

Best wishes with your move - live the dream!!

The highest speed limit on the island is 60 mph but this is only on the H-1 between Kunia and Kapolei, and on the H-3. However, people never stick to the speed limit and 75 is common on in the fast lane on the freeways.

Tone it down? Oh, yeah. Speed limits are just suggestions in Hawaii anyway. Even if it is posted at 35 or 40, hardly ANYONE goes that fast. Most drivers are on Island Time-- no where to go, no where fast. I mean, really, where is there to go? You'll just get to the other side of the island quicker.

Oahu does have its version of an Interstate (H-1) but we never go faster than 50 on it anyway.

The highest speed limit is 60 (H-3 being a prime example), but there are drivers who go over.

A couple spots max out at 60 but otherwise you're looking at 55 or even less.

So yes, you'll need to tone it down a little. On the other hand, you're unlikely to be driving on freeways as often as you're used to elsewhere.

55 is the highest, I am pretty sure. We really don't have the kind of highway system where 70 mph is gong to work well.

Yes, it's possible

If that's true, you may need to trade for a hopped up golf cart.
