I've been to Hawaii four times, spending a total of 6 weeks there, and I've done a lot of snorkeling and scuba diving. You have to go out of your way to find sharks there. The only ones I've seen around there were timid little things hiding under rocks, far more afraid of the divers than you would be of them. Sharks are the least of your worries. The biggest danger is getting knocked down by a wave, so be careful out there.

I just got back from a trip to Oahu, I'm actually at the airport as I type. Lol! Anyways, the safest place on the beach I'd say is on Waikiki. Along Waikiki beach you'll see a long stone wall enclosing a certain area of the beach. In that little enclosure the water is more shallow and the bottom is sandy so you don't cut yourself on the rocky bottom or on corals ( i cut my knee on coral, ouch!) The wall prevents strong waves from entering so its a rather peaceful family friendly enclosure. I haven't seen any bad animals the whole week I was there either so if you want to step out and let the waves wash you around I'm sure you'd be perfectly fine! Have fun! I had a blast and can't wait to go back!

I believe the beaches right in Waikiki are generally considered the safest when it comes to sharks. The downside is all the tourists and you're just off a beach with a ton of buildings rather than something more scenic. The upside is if there are sharks in the water, there are plenty of other targets virtually non-stop alongside you so your risk is minimized. The beach there is very popular for a reason.

Sharks are far more of a problem in California (where I live) than in Hawaii (where I visit). The really dangerous sharks seem to like cold water, not the warm water off Hawaii (I've heard the same about other tropical ares). There are areas that are famous for dangerous sharks (part of the Australian coast, for example), but Hawaii is not one of them. Take surfing lessons without fear of sharks, and please avoid dangerous waves, car accidents, and falling down stairs.

Hey, welcome to Hawaii, ok? You know, Hawaiian hea often look upon certain animal as having some spiritual bond with them, like spirit of ancestor, (aumakua) ok? Often this gonna be shark, which we call M'ano, ok? Now, I not big on this belief, so I only tell you this cause you not only person who worry bout shark when they surf, ok? You stupid NOT to at least know bout them ok? And, I have to tell you that once you get inna ocean, you become part of food chain, ok? Bout 40 specie of shark hea inna island, but ones which attack people usually only Tiger shark that actually bite people, although Great White, Galapagos, and black tip reef can be aggressive to people, ok? So, what to do? Avoid surf inna place where shark hang out, don't go at nite, when most shark hunt, and if you see shark inna water, you get OUT, ok? You instructor gonna take good care you, specially if you take lesson at Waikiki, or Halieva, so not a problem, just go and enjoy, yeah? It been while since I see shark while surfing, and last time I see Tiger, a ten footer, was one that cruise through where I snorkel, but funny thing, I not even see it till it on it way back to deep water, ok? When we spearfish we have to watch real close for shark, cause blood from catch, and sound of struggle attract shark, but mostly they dust wanna take fish, not human, ok? Peace and aloha to you!

actually sharks arent a big thing here in Honolulu/Oahu area. But some beaches are really rough especially Sandys. Try Crownwells near Diamond Head or Walls in Waikiki. I do not here so much accidents or dangers from these beaches.

There are more people killed in car accidents every year in Hawaii then bitten(not killed) by sharks.

You are at more of a risk of getting hurt in the rental car and airplane then while surfing.

Don't worry about it.
